The 28-year-old, formerly of Notts County and Derby signed a 3-month loan
deal at Everton with a view to a permanent transfer, if the loan period went
well. He moved to Glasgow from Aston Villa in 1997 for £2.3M but his
career at Parkhead never got out of first gear, as he was hampered by a drastic
loss of form and a succession of injuries.
The Newcastle-born striker came back towards the end of the 1998-99 season and was on the bench for the 1999 Scottish Cup final. However, his only appearances this term have been in the UEFA Cup against Cwmbran Town, when he scored once in the 10-0 aggregate victory. Johnson played alongside Kevin Campbell in his England Under-21 days and was a teammate of Mark Pembridge at Derby County. He also knows John Collins and had hoped to settle into life at Goodison Park quickly. The move was expected to become permanent after the two clubs had agreed a fee. But match fitness proved to be the problem for Johnson as he struggled to come to terms once again with the physical demands of the game. He finally looked up to standard after getting a good run of matches and popping in some goals for Everton Reserves, but he never got a full debut for Everton, making just three sub appearances. In November 1999, with a month still left on his three-month loan, the decision was made that Everton would not be able to follow through on the agreed terms for a permanent transfer, and Tommy Johnson returned somewhat reluctantly to Celtic. Underlying this decision was the impending arrival of American striker Joe-Max Moore, who was awaiting his work permit. |
